Adventure Seeker with Eh Canada Travel – I feel like a great place to start this journey is to let you all in on how my travel writing journey began. And, of course, to do that, we’re going to have to have some backstory! Writing has always been a passion of mine. I honestly can’t remember a time when I wasn’t writing for fun. Even in elementary school, I was writing children’s stories. Virtually every writing assignment I ever handed in was about ten times longer than required (sorry, teachers). By junior high, I was writing entire books of poetry after I was done with my classwork. I was the most dedicated and diligent highschool newspaper editor you’ll ever find. As I moved into adulthood, I still journaled occasionally and certainly enjoyed writing, but some oppressive elements in my life stole away that passion for a while (along with many others). But, on the other end of all of that, I started writing again for fun. I started taking more online courses because, above all else, I’m a lifelong learner. Those courses, including some master’s coursework that I took just for fun, required a lot of writing. And that was great. It got me back into the swing of things. Writing was still a passion, and it felt good to be doing it regularly again. Heck, I was even writing papers while I was at the hospital in active labour with my youngest child!

But then, how did that all translate into travel writing? I assure you, like most things in my life, the story of how I became Adventure Seeker with Eh Canada Travel is a bit of a strange one…
One of my favourite things to do to get to know people (or connect with those I already know) is play “The Question Game”. This is something I came up with many, many years ago and have been doing regularly ever since. Simply put, one person asks a question, both people answer, then switch to the other person answering. It’s a great way to encourage clear, open, and honest communication and connection. One day, while playing this game with one of my best friends, I asked, “If you could do anything for a career, aside from what you’re doing now, what would you do?”. Now, usually when I ask a question, I already have an answer in mind. But this time, nope. You see, I already do A LOT of things. If I have an interest, I explore it. If I see a certification I want, I get it! So, what was left? I was happy with what I was doing at that moment – what would make me more happy? I rolled a lot of ideas around in my head and then it struck me. The answer was so obvious – “I would be a successful travel writer!” But here’s the thing…I had done virtually nothing up to that point to support this goal. Sure, I travel a lot. Yes, I take a lot of photos of my travels. Absolutely, I love to write. But was there a way to combine those easily?

I kid you not, within hours of that discussion, I got an email from Eh Canada Travel saying I had been accepting as an Adventure Seeker and would be part of a team of other travelers across Canada who would document our journeys across this great country! Wait, what?! Where did that even come from? And then I remembered. Months before, I was about to go to sleep and saw an application for this position pop up somewhere online. I thought, “Hey, that looks fun!” and applied…and then promptly forgot that it had ever happened!
Within a couple of weeks, I was an Adventure Seeker, continuing my travels as normal, but this time capturing those moments to share with other travelers and travel enthusiasts. I had a wonderful team of other travelers around me – a bunch of super-cool people to share my stories with. Six months in, I couldn’t be more happy with how things have progressed. I have been to dozens of locations with many, many more in the works and continue to expand my travel network.

Of course, there is certainly more to tell; the number of exciting things that have happened since last summer are countless – but those are stories for another day. For today, here are my parting thoughts: Follow your dreams. If there is something that sparks joy in your life, do it! For me, that all began with Eh Canada Travel. For all of us, the sky’s the limit!

If you could do anything with your life, what would it be? Let me know in the comments!
